Geography
A wash, also known as an arroyo, is a small river or stream. Typically (at least in rural parts of the central United States, and the especially the deserts of the Southwest) the term wash is used to reference a stream that only carries water when there is rain, and usually dries quickly. The term does not refer to a section of land that gets wet during heavy rains, which is a flood plain. The Wash is a large estuary on the east coast of England

Gully:
Gully in El Paso County, Colorado, USA.A gully is a landform created by running water eroding sharply into a hillside. Gullies resemble large ditches or small valleys, but are metres to tens of metres in height and width.Gullying, or gully erosion, is the process by which gullies are formed. Hillsides are more prone to gullying when they are cleared of forest or grazed, where eroded soil is easily carried by the flowing water after being disloged from the ground, and when rainfall falls during short, intense storms as during thunderstorms. Gullies reduce the productivity of farmland where they incise into the land, and produce sediment that may clog downstream waterbodies. Because of this, much effort is invested into the study of gullies within the scope of geomorphology, in the prevention of gully erosion, and in restoration of gullied landscapes.
EtymologyThe earliest usage of the term is from 1657. It originates from the French word goulet, a diminutive form of goule which means throat. It is possible that the term was derived from a type of knife at the time, a gully-knife, because hills that have gullies look as if they are cut open with a sharp knife.

Ditch:
A ditch is usually defined as a small to moderate depression created to channel water. A ditch can be used for drainage, to drain water from low lying areas, alongside roadways or fields, or to channel water from a more distant source for plant irrigation. A trench can be defined as a long narrow ditch. Ditches are commonly seen around farmland especially in areas that have required drainage, such as The Fens in the UK.
Roadside ditches can provide a hazard to motorists, especially in poor weather conditions. It is not an uncommon sight in some rural areas to see cars that have crashed into ditches, or to hear of such accidents.
Fortification
In military engineering and fortification, a distinction is made between a ditch and a trench. A ditch is an obstacle, designed to slow down or break up an attacking force, while a trench is cover, intended to provide protection to the defenders. In Mediaeval fortification, a ditch was often constructed in front of a defensive wall to hinder sapping and escalade. When filled with water, such a defensive ditch is called a moat. Later star forts of Vauban and others comprised elaborate networks of ditches and parapets, carefully calculated so that the soil for the raised earthworks was provided, as nearly as possible, entirely by the excavations whilst also maximising defensive firepower. Today ditches are obsolescent as an anti-personnel obstacle, but are still often used as anti-vehicle obstacles; see berm.
